What Is GHK-Cu? A Careful Look at the Skin and Coat Peptide

If you've looked into skin and coat ingredients, you've probably run into GHK-Cu — usually accompanied by claims that outrun the evidence by a comfortable margin.
So here's a deliberately unexciting explanation of what it is, where the research actually comes from, and what that does and doesn't tell you about your dog or cat.
What it is
GHK is a tripeptide — a very short chain of three amino acids (glycine, histidine, lysine). GHK-Cu is that peptide bound to a copper ion. Copper peptides as a class have been studied since roughly the 1970s, which makes GHK-Cu comparatively well characterized next to many peptides that appear in wellness products.
It occurs naturally in human plasma, and it's most familiar to consumers from human skincare, where copper peptides have been a recurring ingredient category for decades.
Where the research comes from — and why that matters
This is the part usually left out. The GHK-Cu literature is largely made up of laboratory work, cell-culture studies, rodent studies, and human dermatology research. That's a legitimate body of work. It is also not the same thing as evidence in companion animals.
Species differ in absorption, metabolism, dose response, and safety margins. A result in a petri dish or a mouse does not transfer automatically to a beagle, and a result in human skin research does not transfer automatically to a cat — which, as noted elsewhere in this journal, is a species with genuinely distinct metabolism.
Research involving peptides varies considerably by ingredient and species. Evidence from laboratory, rodent, or human studies does not automatically establish safety or effectiveness in dogs or cats.
What we do and don't say about it

- We tell you exactly what's in the bottle and why it's there
- We don't claim it heals wounds, regrows hair, or treats any skin condition
- We don't publish a mechanism story dressed up as a proven outcome
- We don't cite human or rodent findings as if they were canine or feline results
If that reads as underselling, it's intentional. The gap between "studied" and "proven in your pet" is where most supplement marketing goes wrong, and we'd rather sit on the honest side of it.
The copper question
One legitimate reason to be careful rather than casual: copper isn't inert. It's an essential trace mineral with a defined range, and copper metabolism is clinically relevant in veterinary medicine — certain breeds are known to have inherited copper-storage issues affecting the liver, and copper intake is something veterinarians actively think about in those cases.
This is a real reason to follow label directions rather than improvising, and a real reason to ask your veterinarian first if your pet has any history of liver disease or is a breed your vet has flagged for copper sensitivity. Ask before starting, not after.
How to think about it
GHK-Cu is a well-characterized copper peptide with a substantial research history that is mostly outside of dogs and cats. That makes it a reasonable ingredient to formulate around for everyday skin and coat wellness, and an unreasonable thing to make therapeutic promises about.
If your pet has an active skin problem — persistent itching, hair loss, hot spots, sores, or anything that's getting worse — that's a diagnosis question, and a veterinarian is the right stop. Wellness products are for maintenance, not for solving something that's already gone wrong.
